Some problems cannot be solved one piece at a time. Poverty can be connected to unemployment. Unemployment can be connected to education. Displacement can affect housing, finances, relationships, and opportunity.
Into The Light International (ITLI) looks at those connections and asks a different question:
What could be built to address more than one part of the problem?
Into The Light International (ITLI) finds places facing deep social, economic, and humanitarian needs and looks for ways to bring people, resources, and opportunities together. We turn ideas into practical projects that create real change and can continue to grow locally.
We see a need. We find a way forward. We bring it Into The Light.
ITLI believes people should not be defined by the circumstances they were born into or the difficult circumstances they have experienced.
We have worked with people who have experienced displacement, poverty, disability, loss, exploitation, and other circumstances outside of their control.
Immediate help matters, but we don’t want help to be the end of the story. We want to see people move toward greater stability, opportunity, dignity, and independence.
That can look different in every community. For one person, it may mean a safe place to live while making a transition into adulthood. Sometimes it means creating a community where people can contribute what they have instead of being seen only for what they need.
The projects may change from country to country; but the heart does not.
ITLI is intentionally not built around one program or one particular kind of project.
We go where we see an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
We spend time understanding what is actually happening on the ground, where the greatest needs are, and how those needs affect one another. Then we look for the point where a practical intervention could begin to change several things at once.
There may be a good idea, willing people, and a real need, but no structure yet to bring everything together. Someone has to take the first steps, work through the practical problems, build the systems, find the resources, test what works, and keep going until the idea becomes something real.
We work toward developing local people, local leadership, and local systems that can carry the work forward. Some projects are therefore temporary by design. Our role may be to pioneer something, establish it, help it become sustainable, and eventually step back.
We are willing to go into the space between “someone should do something” and “this is actually working.”
What if what we already have could help meet what we need?
Lebanon’s economic and humanitarian challenges have created enormous need, while homes, businesses, and organizations continue to have usable resources that are going unused.
The Salt & Grain Exchange creates a way for those resources to circulate within the community through a system of points rather than money.
What began as a small pilot is now being developed into a larger space bringing together an Exchange, café, gym, workshops, and community activities.
Before they leave, prepare them for what comes next.
ITLI worked with children and young adults affected by trafficking and difficult circumstances, building programs designed to prepare them for life beyond the orphanage.
Education, healthy relationship training, professional and entrepreneurial skills, English, computer training, career exposure, transition housing, mentorship, and job placement worked together to help young people move toward independent life.
Once the project was established, it was transitioned to trained local leadership.
